Quick question: are you feeling that oh so constant desire to beat the air in your room to a bloody pulp this afternoon? If so, I’d love to suggest that you listen to Pom Pom Squad’s latest single, “Heavy Heavy” as you do so. The latest single from our favorite cheerleaders is a bloodcurdling slow burn that seems to find a way to keep turning the intensity dial higher and higher, hearing damage be damned.
“Heavy Heavy” is a welcome addition to Pom Pom Squad’s discography, and shows the niche that frontwoman Mia Berrin seems to be etching out for herself and her band. Gone is the introspection of “Hate it Here”, replaced with something far more primordial, and yet somehow more thoughtful as well. The song grows effortlessly and constantly — the slowly chugging guitars and churning vocals eventually becoming ornaments for the wall of noise that is Berrin’s screams. True bliss.
The lyrics are what turn the jagged simplicity of the song’s construction into an anthem for every 20-something waking up, hungover, to face this era’s particular brand of existential horrors. It’s a song that knows exactly what it’s doing, does it, and then walks right back out the door. Pom Pom Squad seem poised to take the indie world by storm with their exceptional balance of angry riffs and intimate lyrics. If their new single is any indication, they should have no problem doing so.
